In food production and distribution, food-grade bulk bags serve as a critical barrier for safeguarding the safety of raw materials. When selecting such bags, it’s essential to focus on three key dimensions: safety standards, core material, and structural design, thereby precisely mitigating the risk of contamination.
Safety standards are the primary threshold. Products must comply with national mandatory standards such as GB 4806.7-2016. Be sure to request authoritative testing reports from suppliers, paying particular attention to the migration levels of harmful substances like heavy metals and phthalates. If the products are intended for export, they must also meet the standards of target markets, including EU Regulation No 10/2011 and U.S. FDA requirements.
Material is the core of safety; it must be made from pure raw materials, and recycled materials are strictly prohibited. Polyethylene (PE) is chemically stable and suitable for packaging powdered ingredients such as flour and starch. Polypropylene (PP) is resistant to high temperatures and ideal for foods that require sterilization. For composite bags, ensure that the adhesive used is food-grade. You can perform a preliminary screening by “looking, smelling, and touching”: Bags with uniform color, no blemishes, no strange odors, and a smooth texture are more reliable.
Structural design must take into account sealing, load-bearing capacity, and hygiene. For sealing, choose either heat-sealed edges or zip-lock designs; the width of the sealed edge should be no less than 10 mm. In high-humidity environments, an aluminum foil barrier layer can be added. The load-bearing capacity should match the intended loading volume, with particular attention paid to the strength of the straps and the quality of stitching. It is recommended to prioritize products with smooth inner surfaces and no excessive printing, thereby reducing the risk of contamination. Before use, also ensure that the packaging is intact and undamaged.
